The tri-link that created/awoke Jed did so with the particular motive of enhancing city defense. I'm not inclined to believe that had zero effect on what Jed currently is (regardless of what innate attributes of cities as such were present before Jed awoke).

Jed is particularly concerned with city defense as a topic. In page 71 of Book 3 he kept bugging Stanley about it, to the point where Stanley thought "“If Jed had one hangup, it was city defense.”

Not that anything is for sure, but it definitely does seem to point towards the caster's intentions affecting the personality of tower golems. Time will tell whether it bears out.
What if the tower ends up being GLaDos? The new tower was created by casting on CC's portal, and Charlie's portal room (at least the vault around the portal) was based on the look of the Aperture Science. Plus, when GLaDos came online, the very first thing she did was release deadly neurotoxin.

Not sure if all the previous allusions to Portal make this more or less likely. Parson was introduced as driving to work listening to Jonathan Coulton (who wrote the songs most associated with the Portal franchise), and then asked Ace about making a Portal gun, who responded that it was Titanic magic.

Could someone please note all the overlayed words in the bottom left panel? Some of them are unreadable.

Blue = I'm guessing, but it's a confident guess

Adjustment, remodel, pivot, modification, leap, reorg, disruption, impetus, refurbish, shake-up, upheaval, overhaul, restructure, reshape, restore, redeployment, change, dislocation, turbulence.

There might be one more above the right side of "restructure."

Good list. 3 adjustments:

  1. "Restore" is "reshuffle".

  2. Can confirm there is a word above the right side of restructure. I think it's "amendment".

  3. There is a "turmoil" between the "-ke-" of "shake-up" and "-ion" of disruption.

The fact that this results in the City Golem suggests that the portals, more specifically the portal columns aren't just extensions of cities, but actually their foundations - which in turn might imply that the MK isn't actually a hex on Erf's map, but rather a separate map, another plane actually, from which Erf cities (and probably other stuff) root.

That the MK probably isn't on the same map as Erfworld proper has been hinted at numerous times - it's far larger than a standard hex, its bedrock and sky are different, etc.

Also, "Tower Golem", not "City Golem". A minor point, perhaps, but it means that we shouldn't suppose that any custom work Ivan did on CC's walls (or anywhere else outside the tower) has been lost, and it also casts doubt upon any theories that the etsies in CC's walls (note - not Comm Tower's walls) have been affected.

Unrelated thought - we know that Jed can transfer juice to Maggie in small quantities. What if the transfer rate is limited not by the string connecting Maggie and Jed, but by the amount of juice Jed can source from... wherever Jed is sourcing it? Comm Tower's portal was carnied to allow juice to be drawn from it in large quantities. Archons in the field being fed nigh-unlimited juice from CC's tower golem would probably trump even firearms.

Alternatively, if the tower/caster link actually is the bottleneck: Arkendish.
I wonder if Rob will make this new tower GLaDOS-like so he can sneak in a thinking with portals line without it seeming forced.

Edit: Since this new tower has the 'Dish on her head, I wonder if she'll be able to make outbound calls to other cities. This might head into The Forbin Project.

Charlescomm The City needs a name. Beth the Head? Can she tune to the Garden Channel and go condition pink? Beth the Meth Head.
My money is on her name being feminine and a computer/programming acronym. Obvious choice for me: MOTHER. It's a fertility statue, it has autonomy comparable to a Ruler, and Big Think just turned Charlie's action figure into Isaac from Binding of Isaac. The signamancy and puns do not bode well, but Erfworld isn't always literal with imitating its references. She might just force Charlie to play fair, meaning Charlie would have been bound by Isaac.

"What would the MOTHER acronym mean?" Uh. Master Operator Terminal/Heuristic Enforcer of Rules?

Of course, MOTHER would be the name of his city! Since Charlie, thanks to Isaac, is Erf-bound...
So, Charlie has just gone cold turkey, off the deep end of a cliff!
Whether or not it is his decision is now irrelevant as per the effect it'll have on him. Either his brain will turn to marshmallow or he'd come through it somehow.

New theory: This is Isaac's doing, but he's trying to end the conflict by helping Charlie. Isaac is making sure the world (as a whole) wins, not any one side.

I'd like to think Parson still has some part in this story otherwise it'd be a major anti-climax.

Very true, I'll edit my post. Thanks for pointing it out.

If Erf is meant to be a wargame, then Charlescomm is the control point that no one ever goes after other than a brief "Yeah, its there but its stupid to try and do anything about it." If maps could talk you'd probably hear it screaming to be fought over, to have SOMETHING happen to it other than the dull monotony of being ignored.

"What would it take to attack their stronghold?"
"Oh, I donno, how about 7 trillion?"
"Ok, we can fund that".
